Assassin Empty Assassin

A hot Aridian day. No warmer than average for Aridia, perhaps, but almost unbearable for Gerald. He was used to the temperate, sometimes chilly, usually wet northern coast of his home country, the Seshwoon Empire, and the mission briefing could not have prepared him for this. Dressed in the traditional wide hat and thin, long robes of the Aridian people, he weaved his way through the bustling inner city crowds. After weeks of uncomfortable travel through the desert, he was finally nearing his destination: the Royal Pyramid, in the center of this city, the capital of Aridia. There he would find Edhotep, ruler of the Seshwoon's bitterest enemy, who had been fortunate enough to survive 428 attempts on his love in the past 30 years, earning him the title "Undying" among the Seshwoon. But this time, Gerald was certain the Pharaoh's luck had run out. Gerald had trained for most of his life in the art of assassinating people like Edhotep, and he had no intention of failure.

To be continued when I have time to write the rest.

And nine months later, I rediscover the story and finish typing it up. Long overdue...

Gerald entered the palace through an unlocked side door, dressed as a royal guard. As he walked through the long halls and labyrinthian corridors, he marvelled at the astounding wealth and history displayed in every corner. Here was the heart of a kingdom that had existed for millennia, a kingdom that would soon crush theirs through vastly superior resources… unless he succeeded in this task.

Gerald entered the Pharaoh’s Quarters easily, encountering few guards, who did not seem to be suspicious of him in the least. Apparently servants came and went from even here often enough to be a common sight. He found a door with a label reading “BEDROOM” and quietly opened it. There, peacefully sleeping. His target. He crept up to the bed, selected an anti-magical knife, raised it, and plunged it downward… into the silk sheets. He had rolled out of the way of the fatal strike in his sleep! No matter. Gerald swung again. The Pharaoh once again twitched out of harm’s way. Gerald swung twenty-six more times, missing again and again. “Goddamnit!” he loudly whispered. This was a mistake, for he whispered it loud enough to wake the Pharaoh. “Having a fun time, Gerald?” he inquired in a dusty, ancient voice. “How did you know my name?!” Gerald demanded. The Pharaoh replied, “Well, as sneaky as you’ve been trying to be, we’ve been watching you all along. If you had really been a threat to me, you would’ve been killed right outside King Triadelese’s chambers.” Gerald realized now why every attempt against this man had failed. In desperation, he wildly swung his knife. He caught the Pharaoh off guard and hacked his arm off. The Pharaoh mused, “Hmm. Well, that’s the most anyone has managed so far.” And then Ed punched Gerald’s blood out.
